SUSSEX DOWNSMAN HIKE

3rd OCTOBER 2009

A test of endurance on the South Downs for Scouts and Guides of all ages

CLASS D

Best Time : 7 hours 08 minutes

2008 Winners : Pegasus - 9 hours 47 minutes

NOTE:
This year will be the last time that Class D will be run. The winners in 2009 get to keep the trophy forever!

This class is for under 18 years (Explorer Scouts) – Female only teams. We would recommend a minimum age of 14 for this class.

Each member of the team will walk an average of 26 miles in 2 stints with a rest in between.

The route is from DEVIL'S DYKE to EASTBOURNE approximately 35 miles.

The team must consist of four persons to a team but only three are required to hike at any one time - the fourth member being transported by the Service Crew with the facility to change a team member at each of the Service Areas.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT TEAMS WILL HAVE HAD SUITABLE TRAINING AND PREPARATION FOR THE HIKE, AND THAT ALL MEMBERS ARE PHYSICALLY FIT.

Three team members must book in at ALL Checkpoints and the complete team, i.e. 4 members, at ALL Service areas. Failure to do this will automatically disqualify the team.

Teams must also ensure that their Tally Card is presented and clipped at each Checkpoint and Service Area reached en-route. Failure to obtain a valid clip at a checkpoint or Service Area will result in the team having to back-track to obtain the clip, or automatic disqualification.

The winning team will be the one that completes the full distance in the shortest time. This is a race event, and is not intended to be a map reading test. However, good map reading skills are essential in case of bad weather or an unexpected diversion (i.e. if you get lost!).

The winners will be presented with the Silver Cup.

The team must comply with the rules regarding clothing and equipment at all times.

Teams may start from Devil's Dyke between 1200 and 1400 hours and have 16 hours from their start time to complete the hike.
