SUSSEX DOWNSMAN HIKE

4th OCTOBER 2008

A test of endurance on the South Downs for Scouts and Guides of all ages

CLASS B

Best Time : 10 hours 35 minutes, 2005, Pegasus

2008 Winners - Boot trophy : Pegasus - 13 hours 35 minutes
2008 Winners - Pegasus Plate : Not awarded

NOTE:
The The Pegasus Plate will, from now on, be awarded to the fastest team that includes at least 2 female team members to complete the distance. If no qualifying team completes the distance, the team that includes at least 2 female members that covers the greatest distance (in the fastest time in the event of a tie) will win the trophy.

This class is for under 18 years (Explorer Scouts) - Male, Female or mixed teams. We would recommend a minimum age of 14 for this class.

Each member of the team will walk an average of 45 miles in 3 stints with rests in between.

The route is from BIGNOR HILL to EASTBOURNE approximately 60 miles.

The team must consist of four persons to a team but only three are required to hike at any one time - the fourth member being transported by the Service Crew with the facility to change a team member at each of the Service Areas.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT TEAMS WILL HAVE HAD SUITABLE TRAINING AND PREPARATION FOR THE HIKE, AND THAT ALL MEMBERS ARE PHYSICALLY FIT.

Three team members must book in at ALL Checkpoints and the complete team, i.e. 4 members, at ALL Service areas. Failure to do this will automatically disqualify the team.

Teams must also ensure that their Tally Card is presented and clipped at each Checkpoint and Service Area reached en-route. Failure to obtain a valid clip at a checkpoint or Service Area will result in the team having to back-track to obtain the clip, or automatic disqualification.

The winning team will be the one that completes the full distance in the shortest time. This is a race event, and is not intended to be a map reading test. However, good map reading skills are essential in case of bad weather or an unexpected diversion (i.e. if you get lost!).

The winners will be presented with the original Boot trophy.
The fastest mixed team will be presented with The Pegasus Plate.

The team must comply with the rules regarding clothing and equipment at all times.

Teams may start from Bignor Hill between 0800 and 1200 hours and have 20 hours from their start time to complete the hike.
